Is the cost of water-based paint really higher than that of oil-based paint?

21 Feb, 2022

In recent years, with the improvement of environmental protection regulations and the awakening of consumers' environmental awareness, the coatings market has tended to become healthier and safer. Both the government and consumers encourage companies to eliminate oily paints that are heavily polluting and switch to environmentally friendly water-based paints. But there are still many doubts that hinder everyone with water-based paint, and the cost occupies a very important factor. The following is the cost comparison between water-based paint and oil-based paint:

  1. Unit cost

The unit price of water-based paint is higher than that of oil-based paint. The cost of water-based paint is about 30% higher than that of oil-based paint. However, the coating cost can be effectively controlled through the combination of UV primer + water-based surface coating process.

  2. Equipment and operating costs

Oil-based paint requires photo-oxygen exhaust gas purifiers, catalytic combustion or regenerative combustion equipment, etc., all of which are extremely expensive.

The company's original coating equipment can be used for water-based paint coating without changing the production line, but professionals need to control the spraying environment and dry environment on site.

  3. Uncalculated cost of risk

Oil-based paint is a flammable and explosive hazardous chemical. It must have fire-proof and explosion-proof security facilities and dedicated personnel. Although these costs may not seem high, they are long-term consumption.

The water-based paint is not flammable and has zero risk in terms of fire safety.

  4. Continuous savings in coating costs and labor costs

Oil-based paint is added with curing agent and chemical thinner, while water-based paint is diluted with water. This cost gap is obvious. If machine spraying is used, water-based paint (one-component) can be recycled and reused, and there is no curing problem of oil-based paint.

Of course, don’t worry about the cost of the equipment, because the spraying efficiency of the machine is higher, which can save two-thirds of the labor cost. In this way, the cost of the spraying equipment can be recovered in three months.

  5. Environmental protection cost

Under normal conditions, there are many problems with paint emissions. It is necessary to sign a "hazardous waste agreement" with the environmental protection department. At present, the signing procedures are extremely difficult to handle, and the post-processing costs are expensive, about 8,000-15,000 yuan per ton. "Hazardous Waste Storage Pollution Control Standard" processing.

The water-based paint can achieve 100% compliance discharge after its own treatment, and the circulating wastewater in the paint booth can also be directly discharged or reused after being treated.

  6. Employee health cost

Oil-based paint has a lot of harm to employees. The oil-based paint plus thinner makes the workshop produce a pungent odor. Perennial exposure to benzene, toluene, xylene and other solvent chemicals is an occupational hazard. It hurts the health of employees and also increases the labor insurance costs of the company. In the event of an accident, insurance is not a panacea.

If water-based paint is used, it is harmless to the human body, safe and environmentally friendly, and employees will not have related occupational diseases, and there is no worries about recruitment and employment.

  7. Storage and transportation costs

Oil-based paint plus thinners are both combustible and explosive products, and they must be protected against fire during storage and transportation. The finished product painted with paint has a pungent smell and will release toxic odors later. The water-based paint is non-flammable and non-explosive, convenient for transportation and storage, non-toxic and odorless, and the finished product does not release toxic odor.

  8. The product is easy to sell, this is called low cost

Some bosses think that the increase in cost will not be acceptable to customers. But think about it, if you put a set of oily lacquer doors with a pungent smell in the store, the price is 1,800 yuan, but another set is non-toxic, tasteless, and non-irritating. The water-based paint door is priced at 2,200 yuan. Which one do you think consumers who care about health and environmental protection would choose?
